Hip Dysplasia result

Sense or nonsense?

We have the opinion that, everybody who is breeding dogs, has as a individual the responsibility to breed as healthy as possible. Every breed has its genetic diseases, a serious breeder should try at all time to prevent that this kind of genetic diseases can spread. It is necessary that the breeder, before the mating takes place, is absolutely sure about it that he/she has taken all the possible steps to exclude genetic diseases.

What do we think -di Ala d'Oro Kennel
Hip Dysplasia (HD) is a genetic disease what not necessary has to show in movement of a dog. A dog can function fine and still have Hip Dysplasia. A dog who is declared to be HD free proved by official x-ray, can also be a carrier of this genetic disease and this way pas this disease on to her/his children. Because of this we find it extremely important to x-ray as much dogs as possible. All our dogs are x-rayed this way we get a lot of information about our bloodlines. We only breed with dogs who has proved to be HD A, HD B en HD C (HD C only in combi with HD A) and were we can be quiet sure the bloodlines are save. Of course, a dog is a living creature, and how much you do your best to prevent this illness, there still is a change that a dog will develop Hip Dysplasia When you overload the dog in his growing period it is also possible that he develops Hip Dysplasia. Every breeder can be confronted with Hip Dysplasia, still it is not custom for many breeders to talk about Hip Dysplasia and we still hear that it is still not normal to inform the new owners the right way. Hip Dysplasia is a burden subject- a pity , because from mistakes we can learn a lot. One thing we hate the most are breeders who know there is a problem in there bloodlines and just don't seems to care. They are breeding with dogs who have this genetic disease (Hip Dysplasia), or with dogs who have Hip Dysplasia in there bloodlines. The consequences are terrible. This breeder usually stays out of trouble, he/she write this problems to the address of the new owner and let them believe that external circumstances has to be the blame of this disease. The breeder carries on like he/she did before and more victims are made in the future- the future new owners and the children of these dogs. You understand that we take it very serious to get information about our bloodlines so we can improve instead of multiply, because of this we bind every new owner who buys a dog from our kennel to x-ray the dog when it is 16-18 month old. When the result of the x-ray shows Hip Dysplasia (HD) we decide together with the owners of the dog what to do with the dog and of course develop a strategy witch's will always be in the dogs best interest.

What can you do
It is important that you ask the breeder, before you decide to take a puppy, if the dogs witch's are used for the combination are x-rayed, also you ask if there are more dogs being x-rayed- like brothers or sisters of the dogs who are used for this combination. Be aware that you only believe official results. Ask the breeder if he/she believes that sorting out these genetic disease by dogs is important. Ask if the breeder can give you any advice about the things you can do or can't do with your puppy to prevent this disease (like: don't let them walk stairs alone, don't let him run and play on a smooth floor, in beginning no long walks etc. etc.). If you don't get the right answers leave this breeder behind. Don't let the breeder put you off with unclear answers, draw your conclusion. Don't accept any obscurity's, this is the best thing to do in the interest of the dog, the breed and yourself.

photo up: The dog has to lay still when the x-ray is taken, help is needed to keep him in the official Hip Dysphasia x-ray position.
photo down: The vet looks if the dog is in the best position to take the x-ray.

Information about the X-ray results

In Holland we have change the way we x-ray from May 2002. Before May 2002 the vet took two x-rays - one with stretch leggs and the other in frog possition. At this moment they only do the strechs way because this is according the other FCI country's and this way we have similar results with the rest of the FCI world.

Result before May 2002 Result after May 2002
HD A1/A2 of HD- = FCI A
HD B1/B2 of HD TC = FCI B
HD C1/C2 of HD +/- = FCI C
HD D1/D2 of HD+ = FCI D
HD E1/E2 of HD++ = FCI E
